Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Common counselling & therapy questions

What is the initial consultation, and why should I start with one?
You don’t need to have everything figured out—it’s an opportunity to explore whether therapy is right for you, discuss your reasons for seeking support, learn about our approach, and ask any questions. Many clients begin here before booking paid sessions.
How do I book a session?

Booking is easy through our JANE platform. Click the “Book Now” links on the services page for the initial consultation, individual, or couple sessions. You can also reach out via the contact form if you have questions first.

Are sessions in-person or online?

All sessions are offered virtually through the secure JANE platform, making them accessible and convenient for clients across Ontario (services are available to Ontario residents).

Is therapy covered by OHIP or insurance?
Psychotherapy and counselling services are not covered by OHIP in Ontario. However, many private insurance plans or employee benefits reimburse for services provided by Registered Psychotherapists. We recommend checking your policy for coverage details, including eligible provider types and reimbursement amounts.
How long does therapy usually last?
The length of therapy varies depending on your individual needs, goals, and concerns. Some people benefit from short-term support (e.g., 5–12 sessions), while others engage longer for deeper exploration. We’ll collaborate to set goals and regularly review progress.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Distinctions vary depending on the province in question, and the terms are often used interchangeably; however, Counselling commonly refers to support for specific concerns or life challenges, while psychotherapy refers to a regulated health profession involving the assessment (not to be conflated with formal psychological testing or diagnosis) and treatment of cognitive, emotional, or behavioural difficulties within a therapeutic relationship. In Ontario, psychotherapy is a controlled act that may only be provided by authorized professionals. At Insight Counselling, services are offered in a way that is responsive to your needs and goals.
