Depression

Depression is a rather common yet serious mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in most activities. It can affect how a person feels, thinks, and behaves and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. Some emotional and physical problems linked to depression can include:

  • Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day.

  • Fatigue.

  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

  • Trouble with sleep.

  • Prolonged and pervasive feelings of sadness.

Due to the multifaceted and complicated nature of depression, it is important that each case be treated in an individualized and tailored way. Since feelings of depression can have so many causes (such as seasonal changes, significant life events, lifestyle changes, changes in environment, significant loss, childbirth, etc), it is important to acknowledge that no cause of depression is the same. Obtaining a diagnosis requires a consultation with a psychologist through a psychological assessment. Psychotherapy can offer a space to explore feelings and experiences surrounding depression to collaborate on ways to work with and manage depression.
